Safety is my job

The last 60 years have seen massive advances in safety in the Process Industries, many of which will be featured during the Institution’s centenary year. Whilst methods, tools, techniques, and systems are important they are only part of the story.

A good safety performance requires that these be applied on a regular basis to all aspects of a business from design and operation through to decommissioning.

This can only be achieved by the co-ordinated efforts of people throughout an organisation, operators, technicians, engineers and managers.

Many of these roles will be filled by Chemical Engineers and as part of ChemEng Evolution, the Safety & Loss Prevention SIG is supporting ‘Safety is my Job’.

This content shows the range of safety related roles undertaken by Chemical Engineers across a number of industries.

It features engineers at all stages in their careers undertaking roles which may not be celebrated in other ways, but which are essential in any high performing organisation.

The technical aspects of their work will, in most cases, have been described elsewhere and the emphasis will be on the people, their job, their enthusiasm, the satisfaction they gain from their work as well as how they expect industry to adapt to the challenges faced by society.

It has only been possible to include a very small proportion of the many thousands of engineers working in safety and of the many industries in which chemical engineers are employed. We hope that readers will find their ‘stories’ as interesting as we have.
